It ended rather abruptly and was a bit of a letdown with the resolution of the hour's conflict, but there was also sufficient closure for a season finale, while leaving other things open to be explored next season. The finale was, as it should be, the most compelling episode of the season, sending the characters in unexpected directions. The episodes that were about the people we already cared about also worked better at fitting in some larger themes of mercy and sacrifice, or the danger or too much power. When they focused more on the main cast members and the people close to them, things improved, especially nearer to the end of the season when there were revelations about family ties among the characters, or when Richard and Kahlan had to make difficult choices about their own relationship. There were quite a few clunkers in the season where it seemed they were trying to mix in elements that didn't fit the flow of the series, like having Richard and company stumble into a murder mystery, or having some quirky kid show up that they needed to protect. Watching the two of them bicker and bumble along as petty thieves was one of the most entertaining episodes of the year. It will be interesting to see how much longer they can string the audience along with this type of thing.Īs a side note, " Mirror", the episode where two people had the ability to impersonate Richard and Kahlan was a high point in the season, giving both actors a chance to show some comic acting ability.
This way the writers could give the audience a glimpse of what they wanted, but still keep the sexual tension, as well as the reason for Richard and Kahlan's separation, intact. While it was revealed to the audience that there were reasons why their developing love for each other was not able to be consummated, the show created various ways to cheat that rule, like having other characters be able to look just like them, or having the ghosts of dead lovers take over Richard and Kahlan's bodies. However, in the episodes where he was given ample time to display his deviousness, he became much more interesting, especially in the second to last episode " Fever." Although that episode did prove tragic for one poor kitten! Getting back to Richard and Kahlan, watching their chemistry unfold was one of the better parts of Legend of the Seeker. When only allowed a scene or two to establish how evil he was, it veered into an over the top mustache twirling style of acting.
Craig Parker as the villain Darken Rahl, on the other hand, improved when he was given more camera time. The episodes I liked best were the ones where he was scarce, which happened quite a few times. In smaller doses, Zedd was not unlikable at all, perhaps that is something the show itself realized and was the reason he was sent on off-camera missions so often. He was annoying in the beginning with his "wise proverbs" that he used to make everything a teaching moment for Richard. Less enjoyable is Bruce Spence in the role of the wizard Zedd, mentor to Richard and leader of their little group. Kahlan is both strong and vulnerable from the very start she made the audience care about her character and what needed to be done to stop Darken Rahl. Bridget Regan as Kahlan Amnell is the standout of the cast.
Likable from the start, Horner's acting improved steadily throughout the season as he grew more comfortable in the role. He is not burdened with doubt or indecision, setting him apart from the flawed heroes that are more prevalent in today's pop culture. Horner's Richard Cypher is a classic hero he is earnest, brave, and selfless. The greatest assets of the show are the two leads, Craig Horner and Bridget Regan. Building from that hour, the show upped the stakes for its characters and became much more involving. The real turning point in the season was the eighth episode, " Denna." That episode both introduced the Mord'Sith as recurring antagonists, and also was the first deeply emotional episode.

Once the main objective was firmly established - that "Seeker" Richard Cypher was on a mission to kill the evil ruler Darken Rahl - then the show was free to give us more action and keep things moving. The first few episodes were burdened with too much exposition, but that is an unavoidable problem when introducing a new fantasy series to an audience who may not be familiar with the books on which the story is based.
